There are dozens of sources of information available on the internet most of which arerely on the samegovernment records or publications. Some sources however are more comprehensive, reliable and easier to use. National Archives: The definitive source for researching yourfamily's military history and a fascinating repository of historical documents. Use the medal roll call records to access details about an individual's medal entitlement, their rank and their military unit. Search the campaign medal and Victoria Cross registers to see if your family name features. Access detailed papers concerning the Victoria Cross includingthe original Royal Warrant signed by Queen Victoria herself. Read original interviews with prisoners of war. The possibilities are endless.
The London Gazette: A newspaper but not in the normal sense. The London Gazette along with its sister papers in Belfast and Edinburgh is the 'official' newspaper of the UK. Rather than stories about breaking news and celebrity gossip it carries official notices includingcitations forthe Victoria Cross which describe the action leading to the award. Its digitised archive is available online and can be used to investigate military honours awarded in world war one and two.
