'Dead Man's Penny' was a term used by British and Commonwealth soldiers during WW1. It refers to the memorial plaque and scroll presented to the next of kin of soldiers killed in action. The bronze plaque was of a similar size to and looked like a penny hence the term 'Dead Man's Penny'.
